FOMO: 놓칠까 봐 두려운 마음

: FOMO(Fear of Missing Out)는 중요한 것, 즐거운 순간, 혹은 사람들과의 관계에서 소외되거나 놓칠까 봐 느끼는 불안감을 의미함. 특히 소셜 미디어 시대에 이러한 감정은 더욱 두드러지는데- 다른 사람들이 더 나은 경험을 하고 있다고 생각할 때 종종 발생.

ex.

Everyone was posting pictures from the concert last night, and I couldn’t help but feel FOMO.
어젯밤 콘서트 사진을 모두 올리고 있어서 저도 모르게 놓친 것 같은 아쉬움을 느꼈어요.

I skipped the party to rest, but seeing everyone’s Instagram stories gave me FOMO.
쉬려고 파티에 가지 않았는데, 친구들 인스타그램 스토리를 보니 아쉬운 마음이 들었어요.

I experienced FOMO when I heard my friends went to a trendy new café, and I couldn’t join them.
친구들이 신상 카페를 갔다는 소식을 듣고, 나만 못 갔다는 생각에 FOMO를 느꼈어요.

 

philanthropist: 자선가

: Philanthropist는 자신의 재산이나 시간을 기부하며 세상을 더 나은 곳으로 만들기 위해 노력하는 사람. 주로 대규모 기부를 실천하는 사람들에게 사용되지만, 작은 선행을 실천하는 이들에게도 사용할 수 있다.

ex.

The philanthropist donated millions to build schools in underdeveloped countries.
그 자선가는 저개발국가에 학교를 세우기 위해 수백만 달러를 기부했습니다.

During the holiday season, many philanthropists organize events to help the homeless.
연말에는 많은 자선가들이 노숙자들을 돕기 위한 행사를 조직하죠.

Even though he’s not a well-known philanthropist, he supports the community by donating small amounts every month.
그는 유명한 자선가는 아니지만, 매달 소액을 기부하며 지역 사회를 돕고 있어요.

 

 

swoop: 낚아채다, 갑자기 내려앉다

: Swoop은 새가 먹잇감을 향해 빠르게 내려오는 동작을 묘사하는 동사다:) 비유적으로는 어떤 기회를 놓치지 않고 재빠르게 차지하거나, 갑작스럽게 행동을 취할 때도 사용됨.

ex.

He managed to swoop the limited-edition sneakers before they sold out.
한정판 운동화가 품절되기 전에 그가 재빨리 구매했어요.

I swooped on the last sale item in the store before someone else could grab it.
매장에서 마지막으로 남은 세일 상품을 다른 사람이 사기 전에 재빨리 낚아챘어요.

A hawk swooped down and caught a small mouse in its claws.
매가 갑자기 내려와 작은 쥐를 발톱으로 낚아챘습니다.

 

swoop in : 갑자기 끼어들다, 재빨리 개입하다, 급습하다

주로 어떤 상황에서 신속하게 등장하거나 행동을 취하는 것을 묘사할 때 사용함.

ex.

Shw swooped in to help just when we needed it the most. 

그녀는 우리가 가장 필요로 할 때 재발리 도와주러 왔죠.

The company woooped in and acquired the struggling startup.

그 회사는 재빨리 끼어들어 어려움을 겪고 있던 스타트업을 인수했습니다.

The eagle swooped in and caught its prey.

독수리가 날아들어 재빨리 먹이를 잡았어요.

 

gloss over: 얼버무리다, 대충 넘어가다

: Gloss over는 어떤 사실이나 문제를 가볍게 여기거나 지나치게 중요하지 않게 만드는 행위를 의미. 대체로 문제의 본질을 감추거나 대충 덮어두고 싶을 때 사용된다.

ex.

The politician tried to gloss over the controversial issue during the interview.
정치인은 인터뷰 중 논란이 된 이슈를 대충 넘어가려고 했습니다.

The team glossed over the critical issue during the meeting because there wasn’t enough time to address it properly.
팀은 중요한 문제를 제대로 논의할 시간이 부족해 회의 중에 대충 넘어갔어요.

He glossed over the mistake, hoping no one would notice.
그는 실수를 얼버무리며 아무도 알아채지 않길 바랐습니다.

 

When people are done charting their hero’s journey, I make them identify their biggest weakness. Is it that they’re missing somebody on their team or that it’s very competitive or that they’re trying to do something that has never been done before? Most people’s instinct is to gloss over it or even skip it altogether. But that’s exactly the wrong thing to do because the audience will notice it and will ask you about it. Instead, face it directly. Tell your audience, “Hey, you may think this is a problem, but here’s exactly what I’m going to do about it.” And by showing the strengths and weaknesses of your story and not hiding anything, you insprie confidence not only in you but also in your story.

 

The best storytellers, they live in the future, and they come here not to just tell us about it, but to show us the steps to get there. And this makes the audience lean forward. And all they need to do to be part of this amazing story is say yes.
